Look for unusual home and away records
Playing on home turf is a big advantage in most leagues, regardless of sport. Support from the thousands of screaming fans gives a boost to the home team and intimidates visitors. Teams generally struggle in away games, and even top teams can’t usually replicate their home records.
Bookmakers know this as well as anyone, which is why the odds are shorter on a team playing in their own stadium.
But there are exceptions to the rule, and these can be very profitable if you find them. Some teams won’t fit the pattern and will actually play worse at home.
Some teams, for whatever reason, just play better on the road.
There are various explanations for this:
Team feels too much pressure from its home fans or, they adopt different playing styles and tactics in away games, which are often more successful than their game strategy at home.
You see this sometimes when a team scores more at home (because the home fans LOVE goals), but wins more on the road as they may employ a more defensive strategy that confounds opponents. Since the team is adept at scoring (as they showcase at home), they can quickly counterattack and score, then sit back and rest on defense the remainder of the game.
This is actually how Iceland made a run in this year’s Eurocup. They sometimes had TEN defenders around the box!
How does all this affect your betting? Bookmakers always make their odds assuming home teams have the advantage.
By doing your proper research, you can identify the teams to whom this does not apply. That creates value betting opportunities, because the odds on those visiting teams will be bigger than they should be in away games.
By that same note, it is worth betting against these teams when they play at home, because the bookies are factoring in home advantage where there is none.
