MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN

Helsingborgs beat Norrkoping 3-1 on the opening day of the season after an impressive performance. However, the newcomers followed that up by losing 2-1 to Hacken in league action away from home last week. The team could hardly have been handed a tougher start to the new campaign than playing two of the expected top teams in the league, but the win against Norrkoping proved that they have what it takes to stay up. The quality in their squad is there in defender Andreas Granqvist, former Italian top flight player Alexander Farnerud and Brazilian Wanderson do Carmo. The veterans will keep Helsingborgs away from the relegation zone if they can stay fit. The team plays a 4-2-3-1 formation with much of the attacking play going through Farnerud, Wanderson and Rasmus Jonsson. They are all technically skilled and the football being played is quick and attacking, so they will be expected to be on the front foot at their home ground.

Hammarby thought that they had beaten Kalmar at home last time out when Nikola Djurdjic put the ball in the net in the 93rd minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside and the league match ended 1-1. The visitors are still searching for the form that made them play some of the best football in the league last season, having drawn their first two league matches. Alexander Kacaniklic is a talented player but the winger is still finding his form after hardly playing at all during his last year at French top-flight side Nantes. If Kacaniklic can link it up with Djurdjic and Vidar Orn Kjartansson the team will be dangerous. Two 1-1 draws in a row in league action is hardly ideal for Hammarby, but the football played has been better than the results. Especially the second half against Kalmar merited more than one point. All they need to do now is converting the chances into goals.

Helsingborgs are good but they are also prone to letting in goals. In two league games they have scored four and conceded three. With Hammarby going on the attack this should be an open league game with possibilities for both teams to score. One league fixture is a small sample, but by the looks of it, Helsingborg will be strong at home this season and no team can go there and expect to get an easy ride. I’m backing the hosts here.

SECOND PREDICTION: HILO – HIGH

Helsingborgs’ two league matches have yielded seven total goals combined and Hammarby have not been the same force that they were last season, but they still have bags of attacking quality. I think we will be treated to plenty of total goals here.

HEAD TO HEAD

The team have not played each other in league action since 2016 when Hammarby won both home and away.
